Dr. Heather Jue, Medical Director
Dr. Heather Jue received her Bachelor of Science in neuroscience from The College of William and Mary in 2006 and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Cornell University in 2011. She practiced emergency medicine in Northern Virginia for 3 years prior to joining VVERC in 2014, and she became Medical Director in 2016. Her professional interests include critical care, feline medicine, internal medicine, and soft tissue surgery. She has spent many years volunteering her time with local organizations that focus on spay/neuter, rescue, and the human-animal bond. Dr. Jue is also an active volunteer with FARVets, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting animal welfare both domestically and abroad, and she leads trips annually with this group to provide veterinary care to impoverished communities. When she is not working or traveling the globe with her husband, she enjoys open water swimming, hiking, backpacking, watching sports, and spending time with her two dogs (Phoebe and Jelly) and four cats (Iggy, Howie, Trouble, and Roo).
Catherine Reiss, DVM
Dr. Reiss received her Bachelor of Science degree in 2001 and
her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 2006, both from Cornell
University. She completed an internship in Small Animal
Medicine and Surgery at the University of Georgia in 2007,
followed by a specialty internship in Small Animal Emergency and
Critical Care at Cornell University in 2008. In addition to focusing
on emergency and critical care work, Dr. Reiss has devoted many
years to animal welfare, working with spay/neuter organizations
and wildlife rehabilitation projects. Dr. Reiss moved to Virginia in
2009 to become part of the VVERC team and was the Medical
Director from 2010-2013. Most of her and her husband’s free
time is spent playing with their two young children. Besides the
two-legged kids, the household also includes a dog, fish, cats,
chickens, a ram, horse and donkey! Her other interests include
hiking, cooking, and travel.
Roo Makosky, DVM
Dr. Makosky received her BA from St. Mary's College of Maryland in 1992 and graduated from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 1998. After completing an internship in small animal medicine and surgery she returned to Virginia and has been involved with both general primary care practice as well as emergency practice. Her medical interests include pain management, critical care, and geriatrics. She has also completed certification in veterinary acupuncture. Dr. Makosky lives in Fauquier County with her husband and two sons. They share the house with one dog, two indoor cats and five outdoor cats. In her spare time, she enjoys running, gardening, and reading.
Cheryl March, DVM
Dr. Cheryl March received her Bachelor of Science in Biology from the College
of William and Mary in 2005 and graduated from Virginia-Maryland Regional
College of Veterinary Medicine in 2009. She worked at a busy small animal
practice in western Maryland for five years before joining VVERC. Her interests
include ultrasound, critical care, and internal medicine. Excited to be back in
Virginia, she shares her home with her husband and two cats and enjoys biking,
cooking, hiking, and skiing.
Rachael Everson, DVM
Dr. Rachael Everson received her Bachelor of Science in Animal Science in 2010, and
her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2014, both from the University of California,
Davis. She then completed a rotating internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery,
with a strong emphasis on emergency and critical care, at the New England Animal
Medical Center of Massachusetts. She moved to Virginia and joined the VVERC team in
2015. In addition to emergency and critical care, her professional interests include
internal medicine, ultrasound, and soft tissue surgery. In her free time she enjoys hiking,
camping, reading, and keeping up with her rescue cat, Gryffin.
Dr. Adrianne Doering
Dr. Adrianne Doering attended University of Pittsburgh for undergrad, then graduated with her VMD from University of Pennsylvania in 2007. She is also a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist since 2010 and Certified Veterinary Pain Practitioner since 2014. She has been working for VVERC since 2015. Her interests within veterinary medicine include pain management, internal medicine, and shelter medicine. In her free time, she enjoys traveling and being outdoors (especially hiking, kayaking, and camping).
Karen Buhrman, Hospital Manager
Karen came onboard to VVERC in November of 2016. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and a long history in both human and animal medicine management. Her hobbies include fast pitch softball, traveling and gardening. She has 5 adopted human children and 5 grandchildren. She also has 6 adopted dogs: 2 Great White Pyrenees named Dublin and Merlin, 2 labs named Daisy and Finnegan, a Sheltie-Collie mix named Danny Boy and a Pitbull Beagle mix named Quinn. In addition to her adopted dogs, Karen also has 5 adopted cats, Penelope, Pippa, Rocky, Missy and Maebh.

Every Saturday Hampshire County Pet Adoption Program will be at the PetSmart in Winchester every Saturday from 11 – 4. Dogs are available for adoption. |
